The South Downs are criss crossed by paths worn through to the chalk where people moved from homestead to neighbour, drove stock to market and carried their dead to burial mound or church. The Novium museum has a Neolithic chalk drum found in a burial site.
In this piece I wanted to recreate within the building a sense of the effort of walking up and down hill and to leave my own chalk trace. Carrying a chalk drum, cut from a quarry in the South Downs slows me down and turns this work into a meditation on walking.
